Darla Smith
1940-2018
Darla Jean “Mema” Smith, an angel of perfection, passed away peacefully on Sept. 6, 2018. She was born on Aug. 24, 1940 in Breckenridge to Sam “Dad” Gilbert and Elna “Ma” Gilbert.
Darla was married to her childhood sweetheart, Fritz Robert Smith III, for 62 years. Darla lived life to the fullest, enjoying reading, cooking, baking, playing bridge with her friends and pressing her luck on the slots.
Darla was preceded in death by her parents and loving sister, Beverly “Bunky” Glasscock.
Darla is survived by her husband; one sister, Sammie Gilbert Morris; her sisters-in-law, Clare Freeman and her husband, Gary, and Sheila Hopper and her husband, Charlie; her children, Coby Jean Scott, Fritz Robert Smith IV and Sam Gilbert Smith and his wife, Barbara; her grandchildren, James Smith and his wife, Celeste, Clinton Woody and his wife, Stephanie, Jordan Boucher and his wife, Justin, Will Smith, Jeremy Smith, and Kelly O’Shaughnessy, and Samantha Smith and her wife, Elizabeth; and her great-grandchildren Audrey, Lillie, Trevor and Sophia. She was loved and cherished by many surviving cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Lola, Angus, and Raymond, her loving canine companions, will especially miss her.
In lieu of a viewing, the family asks all to remember her as she was, kind and patient with the right amount of grit.
Darla requested not to have a big service, but to have just friends and family gather to celebrate her memory.
Instead of flowers, Darla would hope that you celebrate her life in a way that honors her spirit.
Consider a random act of kindness, such as adopting a stray dog on the side of the road, like she often did. Charitable donations in her honor may be made to an animal rescue of your choice.
Arrangements were under the direction of Agape Funeral Home in Lubbock.

Lewie Thomas
1920-2018
Lewie Lee Thomas went to be with the Lord at sunrise on the morning of Sept. 7, 2018 in Snyder. Gene, his sweetheart of more than 76 years, was by his side in their home of more than 64 years. He was 98 years old.
Funeral service for Mr. Thomas will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the First Baptist Church Chapel with the Rev. Ben Reid  officiating. Burial will follow at Hillside Memorial Gardens under the direction of Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.
Visitation will be held from 6-7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Lewie was born on  April 22, 1920 in an oilfield “tent city” near Eastland to Squire Griffin Thomas and Della Gertrude Owens. He moved to Lueders in high school, where he played football and performed in the theater. He met Gene there and married her on Dec. 20, 1941 in Stamford.
They raised their three boys, Leslie, John and Glenn, in the same home.  The last few months had been hard for him, but he had lived through the Great Depression and World War II and he didn’t waste anything. He knew how to squeeze out every last drop of energy of body and spirit. And that is just what he did.
Mr. Thomas served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Philippines and Korea.  He was awarded two Bronze Stars.
Mr. Thomas was a member and deacon of  First Baptist Church. He also sang in the choir and played and sang the music box.
He delivered Meals on Wheels to help others. He always greeted everyone, called us girls beautiful and welcomed us into the family graciously.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, J.B. Thomas and E.J. Thomas, and one sister, Alma Harris.
Survivors include his wife, Gene Thomas of Snyder; three sons, Leslie Lee Thomas of Snyder, Glenn Marcus Thomas and his wife, Linda, of Abilene and John Sterling Thomas and his wife, Janey, of Canyon; seven grandchildren, Mike, Todd, Alicia, Bryant, Randall, Rocky and Jay; 18 great-grandchildren, Hunter, Josiah, Issac, Ashley, Colby, Aaron, Leah, Keira, Kateland, Aiden, Jocelyn, Kinsley, Kennedy, Nikki, Renee, Jonathan, Austin and Brandi; and three great-great-grandchildren, Kalinda, Rose and Rinoa.
