Nov. 14 Obituary
The Rev. Robert Bentley Sweet, 83, of Sweetwater, died Thursday, Nov. 9, 2017 at his residence.
Funeral service for Mr. Sweet will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at McCoy Funeral Home’s Chapel of Memories with the Rev. Tommy J. Jackson and Bishop George T. Garnett officiating. Burial will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery.
A wake will be held from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Robert was born on Aug. 27, 1934 to Jesse James and Novelette Dezoia (Kone) Sweet in Beaumont. He lived in Sweetwater off and on since 1966 and permanently since 1995. He was a pastor for 34 years, covering churches in Rochester, Rule, Roby and Snyder. He was the former first vice moderator of the Lovely Sunset Baptist District Association. He was a member of the Mount Rose Baptist Church in Sweetwater. Robert also worked for Renzenberger Transport Service for 10 years. Robert married Linda Wright on April 11, 1980 in Sweetwater.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, LaTanya Gaines, one son Michael Sweet, one brother, Norton Sweet, his father, Jesse Sweet, his stepmother, Melissa Sweet, his mother, Novelette Cook, his stepfather, Clyde Cook, and two wives, Mildred Sweet and Christine Sweet.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Sweet of Sweetwater; five sons, Wendell Sweet and his wife, Tersa, of Albuquerque, N.M., Robert Sweet Jr. and his wife, Diane, of San Antonio, Craig “Tony” Sweet and his wife, Marcie, of Duncanville, Antonio “Tony” Atkins of Lubbock and Bobby Atkins Jr. and his wife, Noel, of North Richland Hills; four daughters, Terry Sweet, Joyce White and her husband, Doug, and Marsha Sweet, all of Dallas, and Wanda Atkins of Sweetwater; his mother-in-law, Birdie Wright of Sweetwater; 30 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; one niece; and four nephews.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons.
