ODESSA -- The Snyder boys 4x200m relay team finished .61 seconds behind Graham in the Class 3A Region I track and field finals at Ratliff Stadium Saturday, securing a spot in the state meet.

The relay squad -- Justin Boyd, Zach Cain, Jesus Juarez and Malcome Wells -- crossed the finish line in 1:29.84 and will join teammates Ricky McNatt and October Wells in Austin for the state track and field meet May 14-15.

Head track coach Roger White said the relay team fumbled a handoff, but got a strong run from Boyd to grab second.

“Boyd got the baton in fourth and passed two guys,” White said.

He also noted that the gusting winds affected Snyder’s times in the meet.

“Every step we take, we get blown back a step,” White said. “I’m real pleased we’re getting to state. This is a good group of kids. The expectation was that we would be decent, and getting to state was a goal. We just didn’t know if it was a realistic goal.”

McNatt earned a trip to state on Friday with a second-place throw of 157-7 in the discus, and the boys team placed fourth in the region with 42 points. Graham was the top team in Region I with 82.

Boyd just missed a chance to qualify in the 400m dash, placing third behind Lamesa’s Chris Sambrano, just .39 seconds off the pace.

Josh Muniz placed sixth in both the mile and the two-mile, Wells was fifth in the boys 200, and the 400m relay team placed fifth.

October Wells will make her second straight trip to Austin after earning second in two events.

Wells, already qualified in the long jump, took second in the girls 200m dash with a time of 25.32. She took third in the 100, missing second by .11 seconds.

Wells was sixth in the girls triple jump.

The state track and field meet will run from May 14-15 at Myers Stadium on the University of Texas campus.
