The Scurry County Commissioner’s Court will discuss several issues concerning justice of the peace courts as well as emergency management at its meeting Monday morning.

The court will take another look at adding a clerk to Justice of the Peace Debra Boyd’s office. Boyd spoke at the last meeting about how her volume of work, both handling tickets and other type of cases has increased lately and the need to catch up on tickets that are running three weeks or more behind. She said the increase in funds the county is receiving from more tickets would more than pay for the clerk’s salary. Commissioners were openly divided on the issue at the last meeting but since it was not an action item no vote was taken.

Commissioners will also look at giving County Judge Rod Waller authority to appoint a new justice of the peace precinct 2, to replace Travis Brackeen who died Aug. 27, 2002.

Budget amendments for one or both courts will also be considered Monday.

The court will also discuss and possibly act on approving an emergency management program for the county along with a mutual aid agreement and other orders to go along with it.

Cogdell Memorial Hospital’s interim CFO, Richard Murphy, will address commissioners about planned new procedures for purchasing and paying for items at the hospital.

In more routine business the court will hear reports from the library director, county treasurer and other department heads.

The court meet at 10 o’clock in the courtroom on the third floor of the courthouse.
