The Lady Dusters split with Odessa College in a four-game series over the weekend, riding the arm of ace Patricia Gonzales, who did not allow an earned run in 22 innings.

“We’re playing as well as we have been since the program began,” head coach Rodney McNeill said.

McNeill, who bemoaned the lack of intensity from the club at the tail end of a si x-game losing streak, said he saw more energy from his team against Odessa.

“I felt like we played with more heart and fight,” he said.

The Dusters dropped the opener Saturday, 2-1, in eight innings after Odessa scored on a hit and an error.

WTC bounced back to take the next two, winning 5-1 in the nightcap Saturday before blowing out the Lady Wranglers, 8-0, in a five-inning run-rule game in the opening tilt Sunday.

Down 5-0 in the finale Sunday, WTC roared back to tie the game at 5. The game went into extra innings, with Odessa ultimately prevailing, 6-5.

Gonzales went the distance in games one and three and pitched the last four in game two and the last six in the fourth contest.

McNeill said the team also showed signs of getting back into a rhythm offensively, scoring 20 runs in the series.

“We’re getting back to swinging the bats,” he said. “We were swinging well before spring break, and it’s taken us about 10 games to get caught back up.”

McNeill praised the stickwork of Tori Picazo, Theresa Culver and Jessica Prewitt.

“We’re playing good ball,” McNeill said. “It’s still in our hands. If we take care of business against Howard and El Paso, we’re still in the hunt for the third playoff spot.”

The Dusters start a four-game set with El Paso Wednesday and Thursday, with doubleheaders beginning at 2 p.m. both days.

The team will then take on Howard College in a four-game set starting at 1 p.m. Saturday.
