The Westerners salvaged the final game of a four-game set against conference-leader El Paso (19-5) over the weekend, winning the series finale, 10-7, after dropping the first three games of the series.

Cody Guzman got the win, as five WTC pitchers combined to hold off El Paso.

The series got off on a low note, as El Paso pitcher Ricardo Rivas threw a no-hitter, spoiling a strong outing from Logan Hill.

WTC dropped the nightcap Friday, 9-2.

“We felt good going into Saturday,” head coach Billy Hefflinger said. “We knew if we could just drive the ball, we could compete.”

WTC scored five runs in the first inning of Saturday’s finale.

Landon Thompson was 4-for-5 with a homer and three runs scored, and five other Westerners added multi-hit games.

Trey Roberson was 3-for-4 with five RBIs, while Derek David and Josh Heiney also had three base knocks.

Eric Brown and Kyle Toney had two hits apiece.

“Roberson has been working really hard all season,” Hefflinger said. “Our outfielders really put it together and had some good games.”

Guzman relieved Shay Franks, and got support from fellow hurlers Galdino Pena, Garrett Graham and Hank Casey.

The Westerners (8-27, 3-11) fell, 14-4, in the first game Saturday after starter Troy Krugar left in the first inning after being hit by a line drive.

Graham was tagged with the loss.

“The first three games (of the series) we played well,” Hefflinger said. “Logan threw great (in the opener), but the other guy was better, and in the second game ( a 9-2 loss), we hit the ball hard.”

The win Saturday marked the first-ever for the Westerners over El Paso.

“It shows the progress we are making,” Hefflingter said. “Before, we didn’t compete with them.”

The Westerners will host Hardin-Simmons University at 3 p.m. Wednesday.
