The Western Texas College women’s rodeo team took second place at the Odessa Rodeo over the weekend, keeping pace with conference leader Tarleton State University in the process.
Sabrina Lay took first in barrel racing in both the short round and the average. She rode the circuit in 15.63 seconds on her final ride to claim the top spot.
The men’s team did not fare as well, with just two riders cracking the top five in the short round. Odessa won the rodeo, while Eastern New Mexico was second.
Sam Spreadborough took third in the short go in saddle bronc with a 73, which helped the Australian earn fourth in the average.
Clay Bunney finished fourth in bareback in the short round with a 72.
“Overall, we have had good rodeos,” head coach Greg Rhodes said. “We just haven’t hit them at the same time. None of the men’s teams had a good rodeo.”
WTC will host the Snyder rodeo beginning Thursday at Scurry County Coliseum.
Sixteen schools will participate, including Angelo State, Clarendon College, Eastern New Mexico, Frank Phillips, Howard, Mesa Tech, Mew Mexico JC, Odessa, Sul Ross, Tarleton State, Texas Tech, West Texas A&M, South Plains and WTC.
