The Snyder Tigers open district play tonight at Moffett Field against Lamesa, looking to rebound from a disappointing performance against Lubbock Cooper, which shut out the Tigers, 10-0, Tuesday.
Ty Collier (1-2) will get the start for the Tigers. Collier boasts a 1.47 ERA and has struck out 24 batters in 19 innings, allowing just four earned runs over that span.
The Tiger offense has been led by surprising sophomore designated hitter Jordan Dea, who leads the team with 20 RBIs and is batting .500 with two home runs.
Seniors Blake Grimmett and Bradley Price have been solid at the top of the order for the Tigers, especially on the base paths, where the two have combined to steal 19 bases in 20 attempts. Grimmett is hitting at a .444 clip and leads the team with 20 hits through the first 13 games.
Price is batting .405 with 14 RBI, and Marcus Villarreal has hit .387 and swiped eight bases in eight attempts.
In all, the Tigers have stolen 43 bases in 45 attempts. Meanwhile, opponents have stolen just six bases in nine tries against catcher Eric Martinez.
In the field, the Tigers will go with Alex Neal at first, Grimmett at second, Marcus Rodriguez at shortstop, Isaac Ramon at the hot corner and Martinez behind the plate.
Price will play center, Villarreal will man right field and Hadley Hirt will get the start in left field tonight.
The Tigers (10-3) have fought inclement weather all season, with rain forcing the cancellation of the Snyder varsity tournament.
The team will begin the march for the district title against a Lamesa club that has a new head coach in Herb Rios and is coming off a 6-20 campaign in 2003. Senior Tony Gonzales will take the mound for the Tors, who were 2-8 in district last season. The Tigers went 7-3 in 3-3A, tied for second with Seminole.
The rest of the district gets underway tonight, as well, with defending district champion Sweetwater sending sophomore Kendall Carillo to the mound at Denver City, which was 0-10 last year in district, while Merkel will host Seminole.
