The Western Texas College Rodeo team opened the Odessa Rodeo today, trying to gain ground in the Southwest Conference.

The men’s team is a distant third behind conference leader West Texas A&M. WTC has earned 715 points, 300 behind A&M’s 1,018.33. Tarleton State University is second in the standings with 882.50 points.

The women’s team is a close second in the conference with 570 points, trailing TSU, which has garnered 682.50.

In individual standings, Tate Stratton leads the conference in bull riding, and Sam Spreadborough is second in the conference in saddle bronc.

Clay Bunney sits in third in bareback, and Clay Long is fifth in tie-down roping.

Sabrina Lay has a 205 point edge on the next competitor in barrel racing, leading the Southwest with 400 points, and Julie Jones sits in fifth in the goat tying competition.

The Odessa rodeo is scheduled to run through Saturday.
