Western Texas College allowed the leadoff batter to reach base and score in each of the first four innings Tuesday, in losing to Ranger JC, 6-2.
Troy Krugar was saddled with the loss, as WTC (7-24, 2-10) used nine pitchers in the game.
“It’s hard to win when the leadoff man gets on and scores every inning,” head coach Billy Hefflinger said.
After Ranger jumped out to a 2-0 lead in its half of the first off starter Logan Hill, leftfielder Matt Meredith tied it up with a two-run single in the bottom half of the frame.
Ranger responded with two more runs in the second, and it held up.
Hefflinger said the team needs to keep its same focus and demeanor in games where it trails as it does in close games.
“When we get in games that are tight, we’re okay,” he said. “When we get down about four runs, we try to press offensively.”
Hefflinger said the team needs to step up in all areas if they are to compete with conference-leading El Paso Community College (17-4), which is five games up on defending champion Midland, and have taken seven of eight from Midland this season.
“We keep the intensity up like we did against Trinidad and Otero, we’ll be okay,” Hefflinger said. “But we have to play flawless baseball against El Paso.”
