Hermleigh ISD will have a school board election after all following the filing of a write-in candidate on Monday.
Billy Luna, a 1996 graduate of Hermleigh High School, filed the necessary papers to become the third person eligible for election on May 15 in the Hermleigh school district.
His name won’t appear on the ballot, but those of John Williamson and Burton Sandefur will. Both had filed during the regular sign-up period.
Luna, the son of Bill and Nelda Luna, is 25 years old and is employed by West Texas Gas Co. as a field operator.
“I just want to help the future of Hermleigh’s kids,” said Luna. “I want to help out any way I can.”
Hermleigh ISD joins Western Texas College as the only entities having contested races for the spring elections.
At WTC, Bob O’Day is challenging Carolyn Barbee for Place 3 on the ballot. Incumbent trustee Dr. Jay Kidd is unopposed for Place 5.
No write-in candidates filed at Ira ISD, Snyder ISD or for the Snyder city council.
At Ira, incumbent trustees Keith Clements and Dirk Dunn are unopposed, as are SISD incumbent trustees Luann Burleson and Cathy Peoples.
Unopposed on the Snyder city council are incumbents Ron Shaw, Vernest Tippens and Stephanie Ducheneaux. Running for the vacant Place 3 slot is political newcomer Dan Hicks.
Since there are no contested races for these three entities, trustees or council members may vote to not have an election and declare the candidates duly elected.
