Fifth-ranked Midland College swept the Western Texas College Dusters over the weekend in the first home series for the softball team this year, claiming shutouts in the first games Saturday and Sunday.

The Dusters (19-18, 4-8) were shut out 6-0 in the first games of the two doubleheaders. Eryn Kearby and Amber House were each saddled with a loss in those contests.

Western Junior College Athletic Conference favorites Midland improved to 35-4 and 15-1 in conference play.

Patricia Gonzales pitched the back-end of both doubleheaders. Before this series, she had allowed just one run to Midland in her last 22 innings dating back to last year.

In both of Gonzales’ starts over the weekend, the Dusters led going into the seventh inning.

In the second game Saturday, WTC led 1-0 after six, before Midland’s Mailei Hilva smashed a bases-loaded triple.

The Dusters were beaten 3-2 Sunday in the series finale.

“We led going into the seventh in the second and fourth games, we just couldn’t finish them off,” said head coach Rodney McNeill. “We had opportunities to put them away, by driving in some runs. We’re right there, we just have to figure out a way to finish. We took ourselves out of it with some small things, and if we can eliminate those we can beat them.”

McNeill said it was good to finally play at home.

“The girls get tired of traveling -- it wears you out,” he said, adding that field was in good shape for the series.

The Dusters will travel to Odessa Wednesday, then will have six straight home dates -- 12 games in all -- beginning Saturday against Odessa, which has been outscored by Midland by 14 and 16 runs earlier this season.
