Western Texas College earned a split with Otero Junior College Thursday, rebounding from a 5-1 loss in the opener to hammer the Rattlers, 13-8, in the nightcap.

Shay Franks got the victory in the second game, entering in the third inning of a 5-5 contest. Franks faced 13 batters, striking out two and allowing just two hits while fanning three.

“Shay did a good job,” head coach Billy Hefflinger said. “He basically came in and shut the door.”

Hank Casey got the save.

After falling behind 2-0 to start the game, the Westerners added five in their half of the inning, and the teams battled back and forth until WTC plated six runs over the final two innings.

Derek David was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and Eric Brown was 3-for-4 and stole two bases.

Josh Heiney and Kyle Toney had two base knocks each, with Toney driving in two.

Landon Thompson also had a key RBI in the Westerners’ late offensive surge.

Garrett Graham was saddled with the loss in the first game, as WTC employed seven pitchers against the Rattlers in the opener.

The Westerners managed one run on two hits, while Otero scored all five of their runs with two outs.

The Westerners began a three-game set with Trinidad JC today, opening with a doubleheader at noon.
