In a campaign swing through Snyder Wednesday, State Rep. Scott Campbell emphasized his availability to Scurry County residents.

“I am always available and I want to do what Snyder residents want me to do,” said Campbell.

Responding to a statement about industrial development by Snyder city councilman Terry Martin, Campbell agreed that attracting business prospects to small communities is hard.

Martin said the city spends a considerable amount of money on the DCOS (Development Corporation of Snyder) trying to compete with bigger communities.

“And that task is virtually impossible,” said Martin.

Campbell said if Scurry County residents have ideas about any form of industrial development, he would be happy to meet with any group.

“I had a conference with a car dealer in Robert Lee Tuesday about developing float trips down the river there,” said Campbell.

The San Angelo Republican also said he would meet with the staff at the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to see if the funding for the Towle Park renovation project could be accelerated.

“Maybe I can speed things up.”

Campbell also touched on the hot topic of education funding in Texas.

“I think we will have a special session on school finance,” said Campbell. “This makes me real uncomfortable because I know of no agreement (on a new finance plan) that seems logical.”

“I know the governor wants to reduce taxes, but we will have to make up the difference somewhere.”

Campbell said he was not supporting a state income tax to help with school funding, or a small business tax.

“I think we can see a sales tax increase,” said Campbell.

Campbell also said there is talk about increasing sales taxes on cigarettes, plus allowing some kind of gambling at Texas’ racetracks.

“But to my knowledge, there is no agreement,” emphasized the first-term legislator. “But I think it will be a blood bath if we go down there (to a special session) with no agreement.”
