Jimmy McMillan, director of the Upper Colorado Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD), attended Wednesday’s meeting of the Board of County Development (BCD) to again seek funding to help pay salaries for some staff employees.
McMillan asked the BCD to fund $3,900 that helps fund field employees and promotional programs. It was the same amount that was granted last year.
In making the request, McMillan explained ways in which the agency has been instrumental in assisting a number of local organizations with grants, or grant information.
The district has aided the Scurry County Museum with grants totaling close to $70,000, and provided the Scurry County Park Department a GPS map that aided the county in receiving a $500,000 Parks and Wildlife grant.
It is estimated that this map saved the county some $22,000 on the park master plan.
And most recently, the SWCD has joined with other entities, including the Colorado River Municipal Water District in a project that will help kill Salt Cedar along the Colorado River and its tributaries.
By killing the Salt Cedar trees along the waterways, water can be conserved, said McMillan. One mature Salt Cedar will use up to 200 gallons of water per day, he noted.
In other business, the board made a motion to add the election of officers to the agenda of the next quarterly meeting.
Don West presided and directors attending were Joe Hefner, Ray Myers and Forrest Pendleton. Keith Hackfeld was absent.
