The Snyder Lady Tigers got another solid performance from Ashley Martinez and some sound defense up the middle to hold on to a 2-0 win in the district debut Monday over Lubbock Cooper at Cates Field.

Martinez pitched seven scoreless innings, not allowing a base runner to advance past second. She gave up just three hits in the game.

“It’s important to jump out in district with a win,” head coach Darren Pool said. “It wasn’t pretty, but a win’s a win. We struggled at the plate, but our defense played well and helped Ashley out a lot.”

Centerfielder Laura Clanton nailed a runner at the plate on a single in the fifth inning, and Terann Ragland made a nice backhanded spear of a line drive in the same inning.

Snyder scored both of its runs thanks to the generosity of Lubbock Cooper.

After Kelsi Johnson walked to start the second inning, Ragland slapped a base hit and Johnson scored after a pair of throwing errors on the play.

In the fourth, Amber Luecke drew a bases-loaded walk -- the fourth straight in the inning -- to push across the other run.

“I think the girls tried to do too much,” Pool said. “Now we go to Sweetwater, and that’s another team that if you let them hang around, they’ll find a way to win.”

Sweetwater (0-2) was dumped by Denver City Monday, 11-6, after falling to Merkel in its opener.

Johnson will get the 5 p.m. start today.

The junior varsity game was called after exceeding the designated time limit Monday, after putting up 15 runs in the third inning of a 23-5 win.

The JV girls had not recorded an out in the third when the game was terminated.

Tana Sullenger, who left the game in the second after being tripped up at first, got the win to improve to 3-0, and Sara Covington pitched the top of the third.

Covington, Joshlyn Tovar and Laura Zamora all cracked triples, and every player save Sullenger scored.

Jessica Calvert and Courtney Tyrrell each had four runs scored.

The JV improved to 5-1-1 and will take on Sweetwater at 7 tonight.
