Western Texas College has a board election only every other year, but this time WTC likely will be the only public entity required to hold an election on May 15.
Unless a write-in candidate surfaces before next Tuesday, three school districts in Scurry County and the city of Snyder can cancel the election and declare the unopposed candidates elected.
All seats that would have been on the ballot now have candidates, with a lone city council hopeful and two candidates for the Hermleigh school board signing up on Monday, the final day.
Filing the required paperwork Monday for place 3 on the city council was Dan Hicks, a former city police officer.
Hicks, 32, is seeking the seat vacated when James Ashley moved from the city.
Hicks attended Snyder public schools and graduated from high school in Arizona in 1989. He worked in law enforcement for seven years, five of those in Snyder. Hicks also served on the police department in Killeen and Colorado City. Currently, Hicks is employed by United Supermarkets.
His wife, Betty, is a dental assistant for Dr. John Best, and the Hicks have two children, ages 12 and 10.
Unopposed for re-election to the Snyder city council are Vernest Tippens, place 1; Stephanie Ducheneaux, place two; and Ron Shaw, place 4.
Filing Monday for two vacant seats on the Hermleigh school board were former trustees John Williamson and Burton Sandefur. They are seeking the seats held by David Higgins and Sherene Digby, both of whom chose not to seek another term.
The only contested race in the county is for place three on the WTC board. Incumbent Carolyn Barbee, owner of Barbee Medical Supply, is being challenged by Bob O’Day, a former WTC golf coach and athletic director.
Snyder ISD has not held a trustee election since 1996, and the terms of two board members were to expire this spring.
Incumbents Luann Burleson and Cathy Peoples signed up for re-election and are unopposed.
At Ira, incumbent trustees Keith Clements and Kirk Dunn did not draw opponents.
