Because of area showers, the Westerners only managed to get in two games of last weekend’s four-game set with Midland, playing the first complete games against the Chaparrals since the WTC program’s inception, but falling, 5-0 and 5-4 to the reigning conference champions Sunday.
“It’s the best we’ve ever played Midland,” head coach Billy Hefflinger said. “I think we’re getting really close to turning the corner. We just need timely hitting to get us over the hump.”
Logan Hill started the first game Saturday, combing with Tyler Trout in the 5-0 defeat.
Landon Thompson was 2-of-3 in the opener.
WTC had an opportunity in the nightcap Sunday, leaving runners on second and third in the final inning of a 5-4 loss.
Thompson was 2-for-4 in the second game with a home run, Derek David had two hits and Tanyon Reeves collected a pair of hits and an RBI in the last inning.
Troy Krugar went 6 1-3 in the second game, and Cody Guzman and Galdino Pena combined to record the final five outs.
“We only gave up 10 runs at Midland, and that’s a positive way to end the first half,” Hefflinger said. “We have five games at home over three days, and if we play well, it’s possible we could do some things.”
