Harold Coffman

1908-2004

ANTON -- Harold M. Coffman, the grandfather of Zola Schlegel of Snyder, died Wednesday, March 10.

Funeral service for Mr. Coffman, 96, is set for 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the First United Methodist Church in Anton with the Rev. Lloyd Stice officiating. Interment will follow in the Anton Cemetery under the direction of Sanders Funeral Home.

Born March 3, 1908 in Missouri, he married Truby Chancey on Sept. 22, 1926 in Plainview. She died on Feb. 4, 2004.

A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Coffman operated Coffman Food Store in Anton for 38 years, retiring in 1972. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and a charter member of the Anton Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include a daughter, Zelda Teague Barnett of Lubbock; another granddaughter, Malva Smith of Lubbock; five great-grandchildren, Kellie Schlegel and Therin Smith, both of Lubbock, Jay Smith of Houston, Russell Schlegel of Amarillo and Lea Smith of Dallas.

The family suggests memorials to the Little People of America, 5289 N.E. Elam Young Parkway, Suite F-700, Hillsboro, Ore., 79124; or to a favorite charity.

 


E.C. Payne

1917-2004

LEVELLAND -- E.C. Payne Jr., the father of the Rev. Buddy Payne of Snyder, died Thursday, March 11, in Covenant Hospital in Levelland.

Funeral service for Mr. Payne, 86, is set for 2 p.m. Saturday in the First United Methodist Church with the Revs. Jesse Hodge and Raymond Ochoa officiating. Burial will follow in the City of Levelland Cemetery under the direction of George C. Price Funeral Directors.

Born Nov. 5, 1917 in Snyder, he moved to Levelland in 1928 and married Jimmie Lea Lawson on June 8, 1944 in Lubbock.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving with the Fighting 69th in Germany. He then attended West Texas State College on a football-basketball scholarship.

Mr. Payne owned Levelland Auto Supply for 22 years and worked at Fisher’s Auto Supply for 11 years, retiring in 1982.

A member of the First United Methodist Church, he served as chairman of the board from 1967-70 and was active with the Methodist Men, the Lions Club, Jaycees and Masonic Lodge.

Survivors also include his wife, Jimmie Lea Payne of Levelland; two daughters, Sheri Jean Belyeu of Lubbock and Susan Marlene Bradley of Crosbyton; a sister, Vivian Poston of Ruidoso, N.M.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

 


Max Stuart

1916-2004

ROBY -- Max Odell Stuart, the grandfather of Cindy Putnam of Snyder, died Wednesday, March 10, in Fisher County Hospital.

Funeral service for Mr. Stuart, 87, was set for 10 a.m. today in the First Baptist Church in Roby with Jerry Vincent and Jason Alton officiating.

Born Sept. 22, 1916 in Roby, he married Lorene Curlee on March 21, 1936 in Roby.

Mr. Stuart was active in farming and ranching and in 1934 won the National Livestock Judging competition. He continued to be active in FFA and 4-H livestock show judging and was a past-president of the Roby Fair and Rodeo and served as a director of the Farmers Union Coop Gin.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jeff and Mamie Teel Stuart; six brothers, Rabon, George, L.L., Coy, Tommy and Cub Stuart; and three sisters, Lucille Carter, Eva Nell Dennis and Marjorie McQuestion.

Survivors include his wife, Lorene Stuart of Roby; a son, Freddie Max Stuart of Roby; a daughter, Gloria Lou Posey of Rotan; a sister, Emma Lee Collier of Lubbock; five other grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

 


Yank Hildreth

1911-2004

MIDLAND -- Lawrence E. “Yank” Hildreth Sr., father of Larry Hildreth of Snyder, died Sunday, March 7.

A memorial service for Mr. Hildreth, 92, has been scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday in Ellis Funeral Home Chapel with Oscar Bejil officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home.

He was born on Sept. 10, 1911 to Fred and Mary Gates Hildreth in Sudbury, Mass., and he was reared and educated there.

Mr. Hildreth moved to Snyder in the 1950s and later to Big Spring. Prior to his retirement, he worked for I&R Meter Service. Mr. Hildreth was a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Snyder.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Louise Pickett in 1962.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Hildreth of Big Spring; two other sons, Edward L. Hildreth and Paul B. Hildreth; a daughter, Carol Cothran; three stepchildren, Phyllis Sutter, Alton Sutter and Johnny Sutter; 17 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

Memorials may be directed to Home Hospice, 901 W. Missouri Ave. in Midland, 79701.

 


Truman Davis

1922-2004

MIDLAND -- Truman C. Davis, a native of Ira, died Wednesday, March 10, in Midland.

Service for Mr. Davis, 81, is set for 2 p.m. Saturday in the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home Chapel. Don Mitchell will officiate.

Born May 30, 1922 in Ira, he was reared in Snyder and attended Snyder High School. He married Evelene Tamplin on March 6, 1942 in Snyder. Mr. Davis was a member of the Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul M. and Maudie Davis; and a brother, Raymond Davis.

Survivors include his wife, Evelene Davis of Midland; a son and daughter-in-law, Marlin Gene and Floy Davis of Las Vegas, Nev.; two daughters and a son-in-law, Kathy J. Phillips of Midland and Linda Sue and Max Moreland of Bosque Farms, N.M.; a sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and J.C. Wall of Big Spring; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Family visitation will be from 6-7 this evening at the funeral home.
