Jana Young has worked in the county tax office for some five years and will continue doing so. The only difference is come Jan. 1, she will be the boss.
In Tuesday’s Republican primary, Young received 678 votes for the office to defeat Magali Bernal. Bernal received 442 votes. Percentage wise, Young received 60.05 percent of the votes, with Bernal receiving 39.14 percent. There is no Democratic opponent in November for this post.
Young also prevailed in the early voting period as she garnered 223 votes to Bernal’s 178.
Current tax assessor-collector Diana Williamson chose not to seek another term.
“I thank everyone for their support,” Young said this morning. “I promise to work as hard as I can for everyone in Scurry County.”
In all, the voter turnout in Scurry County was poor as only 1,456 people voted out of a registered voter list of 10,840.
Republican voters easily outdistanced their Democratic counterparts by 1,129 votes to 327.
In November, Republican Terry Williams will face incumbent Ralph Trevey, Democrat, for Precinct 1 commissioner, while Precinct 3 incumbent commissioner Howard Limmer, a Republican, is being challenged by Democrat Susie White.
In the only other contested race on the ballot for Scurry County voters, Midland CPA Mike Conaway outdistanced Brownwood educator Bill Lester 752 votes to 194 for U.S. Rep. for District 11.
Conaway carried the entire district by a like margin with unofficial returns for Lester indicating he led only his home county of Brown.
Conaway garnered strong support from Ector and Midland counties as 88 percent of the voters cast their ballot for him in Ector County, and 83 percent of the voters in Midland County did likewise.
President George W. Bush received 1,019 votes Tuesday, while Democratic candidate John Kerry led the field of that party’s candidates with 224 votes, or 68.5 percent.
