Western Texas College board of trustees became the first local board to have a contested race for the May 15 election as former WTC athletic director Bob O’Day today filed for the Place 3 trustee spot.

Earlier, incumbent Carolyn Barbee filed for a third term for Place 3 on the board.

O’Day and his wife, Monette, have been Snyder residents since 1959 with the exception of one year he served as principal of the elementary schools in Colorado City.

In all, O’Day has 32 years of teaching and coaching experience on the elementary, junior high, high school and community college level. He also has five years experience selling oilfield supplies.

O’Day also has been the golf coach and athletic director at WTC, and served as the college’s golf course manager. His wife retired from teaching in 1997.

“Serving on the WTC board would just be one more way to serve the community,” said O’Day. “I think my teaching experience would give a unique insight to the board.”

O’Day said he feels the present administration, faculty and support staff are doing an excellent job at the community college.

Incumbent Place 4 candidate Dr. Jay Kidd is so far unopposed.

Incumbent councilmen Ron Shaw, Stephanie Ducheneaux and Vernest Tippens are seeking new terms on the Snyder city council, The council has one vacant position presently as James Ashley moved from the community. His former spot also will be on the ballot.

Luann Burleson has signed up for another term on the Snyder ISD board, and the other incumbent, Cathy Peoples, has said she would seek another term but has yet to file the necessary papers.

No one has signed up for the Hermleigh school board as the terms of Sherene Digby and David Higgins will expire.

Ira incumbent trustees Keith Clements and Dirk Dunn have both filed for re-election.

The deadline for filing for the local elections is Monday.
