The Snyder boys golf team secured a top-10 finish at the Andrews Tournament, overcoming a tough field and high winds in the first round to end the tournament with a 331-318 649.

Lubbock Monterey captured the tournament trophy with a 310-295 605, and Midland Lee A was second with a 609.

District rival Seminole finished sixth.

“It was a very strong field,” head coach Ricky Hunter said. “The wind was howling the first day, but our scores were a little bit high. We played a little closer to our potential on Saturday.”

Every golfer improved on his first-round total with the exception of Wyl Wiggins, who paced the team with an 80 in both rounds for a team-best 160.

Jay Weaver carded an 85-78 163, while Alan Gray and Jake Cottrell each stroked a 164.

Gray shot an 83 in the first round and an 81 on Saturday, and Cottrell fired an 84-80.

Blake Seale shaved nine strokes off his first round total to conclude the tournament with a 91-80 171.

“We are learning a little bit more about ourselves and our district and regional competition each week,” Hunter said. “District should be pretty interesting. There are several solid teams and only two get to advance to the regional tournament. We will have to play our ‘A’ game if we expect to advance.”

The varsity boys get their final pre-district tune-up this weekend at San Angelo before opening district March 30 at Sweetwater.

The second round of district will be in Snyder April 5, Denver City hosts the final round April 13.
