“She was on,” head coach Darren Pool said. “She’s been on, and our defense finally stepped up. Defensively, we played the best we’ve played.”
Snyder jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, and it was more than enough for Martinez.
“Our bats went to sleep after the first, but we got some key hits,” Pool said. “Overall, it’s the best we’ve played so far.”
Martinez helped her cause at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a single and a double, and Shaela Thompson stole two bases and scored a run.
Brianna Bernal and Terann Ragland each drilled an RBI single. Ragland also stole a base and scored.
Missy Vasquez reached base three times via walks, scoring once, and Amber Luecke scored a run after drawing a pair of free passes.
After Friday’s heavy rains forced Pool to can cel the first day of the tournament, the coach said several groups spent much of the evening preparing the fields for Friday’s action.
He said he was happy to get the tournament underway.
“I’m glad it started,” he said. “The county guys, Tommy Johnson and his crew, the school guys and the booster club spent several hours getting it ready. The fields are in good shape.”
The Lady Tigers (4-8) opened the championship bracket at 10:45 a.m. Saturday against Midland High JV.
