The Snyder Tigers suffered their first loss of the season Friday at the Frenship Tournament, 4-3 to Perryton.
Snyder took a 3-0 lead before starter Ty Collier ran into trouble in the third inning.
After a walk and an error put two runners on for the Rangers, Collier gave up a three-run home run and then a solo shot to the next batter, making it 4-3 in favor of Perryton.
The home runs were the only hits allowed by Collier. Lico Castill relieved Collier in the third and pitched four shutout innings, allowing just three hits.
The Tigers mustered just five hits in the contest.
“We should have been more aggressive at the plate,” Coach Charles Bollinger said. “We took too many strikes.”
Blake Grimmett, Hadley Hirt, Collier, Castillo and Eric Martinez had one hit each, with Martinez, Hirt and Neal driving in a run apiece.
The Tigers had some costly miscues in the field, committing three errors.
“The errors hurt us, but other than that we played all right,” Bollinger said.
The game ended on a controversial call with the bases loaded.
Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh with one out, Alex Neal hit a ground ball. Dea was ruled out at second, but an errant throw to first allowed two Tigers to cross the plate with the apparent tying and winning runs.
However, the umpire called Dea out for interference, which resulted in Neal being out at first and Perryton escaping with a 4-3 win.
“There was no way they were going to turn the double play,” Bollinger said. “We felt we won. It was a horrible call. We were fighting back in the last inning and it was a pretty sure thing we were going to tie it up. But there’s not much we could do about it.”
The Tiger skipper did not lay the blame for the loss on the officials, however.
“Regardless of the interference call, we should have won the game,” he said. “We should have scored more runs.”
Dustyn Williams took the mound Saturday at 12:30 p.m. against Borger as the tournament continued.
The Tigers also were scheduled to play Plainview at 5:30 Saturday.
