Lake J.B. Thomas has received around 3,000 acre-feet of water from Thursday’s rainfall, and a like amount is expected in Lake Spence near Robert Lee.

“We expect some more water in Lake Thomas, but not much more,” said Chris Wingert, engineer with the Colorado River Municipal Water District in Big Spring.

Wingert said most of the rain Thursday fell right at the lake, and not that much on the watershed.

“The lake has come up about a foot and a half,” said Wingert, and added a like rise is expected at Lake Spence.

More than five inches were reported by a resident at Lake Thomas Thursday afternoon. CRMWD’s official measurement at the lake was 2.7 inches.

Texas Tech’s remote weather station at Gail recorded 1.22 inches, while its site at Fluvanna recorded 2.04 inches. The site at the Snyder industrial park recorded 1.50 inches and the official measuring station at the Snyder water treatment plant received 1.36 inches of rain.

Thursday’s runoff resulted in the National Weather Service from Midland issuing a flood warning just after midnight Thursday for Deep Creek near Dunn and for the Colorado River at Colorado City.

The flood stage for the creek at Dunn is 14 feet, and it crested at 17.9 feet early this morning.

The flood stage at Colorado City on the Colorado River is 15 feet and it is expected to crest at 19.5 feet early Saturday morning.

On June 30, 1967, the Colorado River crested in Colorado City at 19.7 feet.

Scurry County escaped the damaging winds that hit counties to the east.

The weather service received reports of possible tornadoes in Callahan, Haskell, Jones, Taylor and Nolan counties.

The highest wind recorded in Snyder Thursday was 44 mph, while 53 mph was reported at Fluvanna.

Several weather-related calls were made to the dispatchers at the Law Enforcement Center beginning around 8 a.m. with a call for barricades to be placed at 13th St. and Avenue E because of high water.

Barricades were later placed at U.S. 84 and Muriel St.; 25th St. and Ave. Z; and 23rd St. between Avenue I and J.

Scurry County deputies and DPS troopers reported water over the road in several locations with the most two miles south of Hwy. 180 on FM 1606, and near the Kinder Morgan offices on West Hwy. 180.
