The Snyder thinclads set nine personal records at the first track and field meet of the season, and hope to use those times and distances as a springboard to a first-place finish at the Canyon Reef Relays Saturday.
“The conditions (at Frenship) weren’t favorable, but we ran good times and competed hard,” head track coach Roger White said. “We ran times I expected at midseason.”
Snyder beat all 3A schools at the Frenship meet, finishing with 81 points although the team did not enter in the pole vault, high jump or triple jump.
With four other track meets taking place Saturday in West Texas, the field for the Snyder meet has been whittled down to eight teams, including the Tigers.
Four of the six Districts 3-3A will participate, with only Sweetwater and Denver City not attending.
Sweetwater will be at the Wylie meet, while Denver City originally was scheduled to be in Snyder, but pulled out of the meet.
Along with Seminole, Lamesa and Merkel, other boys teams entered in the Relays include Midland Greenwood, Roby, Seagraves and Shallowater.
White said several athletes have exceeded early-season expectations, including shot putter Demetrius Brandon, runners Jesus Juarez and Malcome Wells, Antoine Cobb and Zach Cain.
White added that the recent deluges that have swept across the area have set the team back, preventing the athletes from working on techniques and steps.
And he still thinks the team isn’t at its best yet.
“I feel like we haven’t run our best times by far,” he said. “We need to keep working and build to a peak at district. There’s still room for improvement.”
Girls head coach Todd Pollard thinks the team also has a shot to win the meet.
“I feel good about our chances,” he said. “It’s kind of new, since we have several girls I haven’t seen. This will give us a chance to get a look at them and see who performs.”
Returning state qualifier leads a group of 34 girls who signed up for track this year.
“I’m excited,” Pollard said. “We have 34 quality girls this year, and I expect several of them to come out and do good things.”
The Canyon Reef Relays get underway at 9 a.m. with the varsity girls triple jump, and will close with the running finals, which are scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
