Big Country Electric Cooperative has announced the winners of the annual Youth Tour Speech Contest. The contest was held Feb. 23 at the Roby High School Auditorium. Three winners, Cassidy Pritchard of Stamford, M’Lynn Lehrmann of Rule and Wes Terry of Roby will join approximately 1,500 other teens across the country for a nine-day all expense paid trip to Washington, DC in June.
Along with the trip to D.C., the students will each receive a $1,000 scholarship. John Wilson of Borden County receives a $1,000 scholarship and will serve as alternate in the event one of the students is unable to go on the trip.
The purpose of this tour is to provide an opportunity for youth to visit monuments, governmental buildings and cooperative related organizations in order to become familiar with the historical and political environment of our nation’s capitol.
They will enjoy the best off Washington, D.C., tour the Smithsonian Institute, Ford’s Theatre, the FBI building, Jefferson and Lincoln memorials and countless other points of interest. They also will visit Arlington National Cemetery, the Vietnam Memorial and the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Other contestants were Abby Dudensing, Bonnie Emert, Carolyn Marshall, Courtney Buerger, Deborah Long, Erica Peters, Fran Leighton, Jimmy Rincker, Joshua Kemp, Priyanka Patel, Stephanie McLemore and Eli Oldham.
