Two students from Scurry County will test their spelling skills Saturday at the regional spelling bee in Lubbock.

The bee begins at 1 p.m. at the International Cultural Center at Texas Tech University.

Monica Clanton, a sixth grader at West Elementary, will represent the Snyder Independent School District and seventh grader Casey Williamson will represent Hermleigh School.

Ira School did not participate in the 2004 spelling bee.

Monica, the daughter of Anne Clanton and Monte Clanton, first won West Elementary’s campus bee on Jan. 29 and then the SISD Bee on Feb. 10.

The upcoming competition has Monica a little nervous but she is excited that she will get to compete. She studies the spelling words from 15-30 minutes a day and either her mother or someone else calls out the words.

After winning the 7th grade bee, Casey Williamson later took top honors at the Feb. 13 campus bee.

She is the daughter of Kelly and Dan Dacus of Hermleigh and James and Donita Williamson of Stanton.

Casey said she studies the words when she has free time at school and her mother helps her at home.

She describes going to the regional bee as “pretty cool.”
