The Snyder varsity boys golf team finished fifth in the Midland Tournament over the weekend, finishing 57 strokes behind tournament champion Monahans with a two-round total of 668. The Tigers fired a 330 on the first day and closed out the second round with a 338.

Jay Weaver was the first medalist for the second tournament in a row, carding a 73-78 151.

“Jay had another great weekend,” said coach Ricky Hunter. “If we can just get a few more guys to play close to their ability levels, we will be in good shape.”

Hunter said the Midland Tournament is a good gauge of what the regional tourney will look like, and said this year’s regional field is as tough as ever.

“If there was ever any doubt about how tough our region is, there should not be any now,” he said. “After this weekend, it’s clear that we are not where we need to be at this time of the season. We have to realize that there are other talented golf teams out there who want to win just as bad as we do.”

Blake Seale shot an 82-85 for the Tigers, while Alan Gray fired an 84-86 170.

Jake Cottrell had the fourth-best score for the Tigers with a 91-89 180, while Wyl Wiggins finished with a 92 93 185.

While Monahans ran away from the field with a 323 318 611, Canyon took second with a 328 324 652. Fort Stockton was third with a 661, while district rival Seminole finished four shots ahead of the Tigers with a 664.

The Snyder junior varsity was 11th in the tournament with a 357 343 700.

Cole Robertson led the way with an 87 83 170.

Tanner Bloom stroked a 90 86 176, Syd Wiggins shot an 88 89 177, John Whitworth carded a 92 96 188 and Matthew Schoolcraft ended the tourney on a strong note, shaving 21 strokes off his first round total of 106 to fire an 85 in the final round for a 191.

The boys head to the Andrews tournament this weekend, and Hunter hopes to see some improvement before the district tournament begins.

“We have two more invitationals and about four weeks to go to get ready for district,” he said. “Time is starting to get short. I hope we can rise to the occasion and get back on track as a team.”
