COPPERAS COVE -- The Snyder Lady Tigers kicked off the 2004 softball campaign with mixed results last weekend, going 2-2 in the consolation bracket at the Copperas Cove Tournament.
The team dropped a pair of games in pool play -- 4-3 to Granbury and 4-1 to Jarrel -- to prevent it from gaining a spot in the championship bracket.
In the first game in the consolation bracket, the Lady Tigers stranded 13 runners, spoiling a solid outing from Ashley Martinez in a 7-5 loss to host Copperas Cove.
Martinez went the distance, striking out five and going 4-for-5 at the plate.
Missy Vasquez collected three hits and Kelsi Johnson was 2-for-3.
Head coach Darren Pool said the team had costly miscues on defense that contributed to the loss. Snyder committed six errors in the tilt.
“Ashley threw well enough for the win, we just didn’t back her up,” Pool said.
The Snyder nine rebounded against Lampasas, winning 9-5, behind six strikeouts from starter Kelsi Johnson.
Lindsey Morin was 3-for-3 and Amber Luecke went 2-for-3 in the victory.
“We hit the ball and at key times when we had runners on base,” Pool said. “Our fielding also came together to back Kelsi up.”
Offense was the key in the third game of bracket play, with the Lady Tigers smacking 20 hits in a 12-1 thumping of Moody.
Martinez again got the start, allowing just one run on seven hits while fanning nine.
Martinez, Luecke, Johnson and Morin all collected three base knocks in the game.
The bats went to sleep in the last game of the tournament, a 4-2 loss to Burnet.
Snyder tallied just five hits and made a crucial base-running mistake to kill a third-inning rally.
Johnson worked the first 2 1-3, with Luecke finishing the final 2 2-3.
“Burnet was a good team with a good pitcher, and we just couldn’t hit the ball,” Pool said, adding that overall he was pleased with the play of his club.
“We made some big mistakes early, but by the end of Saturday we were starting to put it together as a team,” he stated. “Our pitching gave us opportunities to win all weekend, and that’s exciting.”
The team got back into action today at the Midland Tournament, scheduled to run through Saturday.
