Averie Pearcy, Ira sixth grader, won second place in an essay contest held by the Texas School Safety Center.

Pearcy’s essay, titled School Violence and Prevention, gave ideas on how to avoid violence at school and how students, teachers and parents all play a large role in educating kids on violence.

She will be awarded $300 and will be recognized at the Safety Center’s annual banquet on March 1 in Austin.

There were 988 entries in the 6th, 7th and 8th grade categories and 323 entries in the 6th grade category.

Pearcy’s school sponsors include Mrs. Riki Jones and Mrs. Joanna Roemisch.

She is the daughter of Gary and Brandie Whisenhunt.
