Tony Pena hoisted almost 900 pounds to claim the lone first-place finish for the Tigers at the Snyder High School powerlifting meet Saturday at the Scurry County Coliseum.
Pena earned the top spot in the 130-pound division with a total weight of 880 pounds.
Snyder was seventh in the team standings, placing behind meet champion Lubbock High, runner-up Post and third-place Levelland.
Abernathy was fourth, Sweetwater claimed fifth and Roby took sixth place.
Johnny Vasquez took third in the 185-pound class, Ricky Early was fourth in the super heavy weight division, and Jeffrey Martinez (220) and D’Angelo Davis (165) each came in fifth place.
Courtney Tyrrell was second in her weight class, and Katherine Johnson won her division as the only entrant.
“I thought it went off pretty well,” powerlifting coach Armando Martinez said. “I think our guys didn’t do as well as they needed to do, though.”
Martinez said many of the lifters are juggling powerlifting, track and football (offseason), but said a few competitors have a shot at regional.
