Snyder’s road to the return of “Sparkle City” kicked off Saturday morning at the Snyder Chamber of Commerce as volunteers gathered for coffee and donuts before heading out to various work sites.

The project, known as Focus On Cleaning Up Snyder or FOCUS, will continue every Saturday and Sunday through April 24.

“We’re here to do a job and we’re not going to mess around,” said Neilda Word, one of eight volunteers at a Snyder home Saturday morning.

The idea behind the campaign is to return Snyder to the same status that it enjoyed as one of the nations Sparkle Cities back in 1967.

“This is something that Snyder really needs,” said Vicki Shroyer, executive director of the chamber. “Snyder is a wonderful place and we really want that reflected to the people who visit us.”

The Snyder police department also will be working in conjunction with the chamber on FOCUS by enforcing city ordinances and state law regarding junk vehicles.

City officers will canvas the city looking for vehicles that are in violation. A “red tag” will be placed on any vehicles that are not in compliance.

The red tag gives notice that the owner of the vehicle has 10 days to remove the vehicle from the city limits or get the vehicles into compliance. The owner is subject to a fine not to exceed $200 for each day the vehicle is not in compliance, and the vehicle could be towed.

Residents also are urged to form neighborhood cleanup projects.

Anyone needing more information about cleaning a property or becoming a volunteer with FOCUS is asked to contact the chamber at 573-3558.
