The Snyder Lady Tigers open the playoffs Friday, facing a Perryton squad fresh off a grueling overtime win over Littlefield.
Snyder (27-2, 10-0) will battle the Rangerettes at 7 p.m. at Wayland Baptist University in Plainview, hoping to secure an area trophy in the first playoff game of the Mike Martin era.
While Perryton (18-11, 6-4) already has the confidence and experience from a bi-district victory, the Lady Tigers have the fresh legs, having been idle for a week and a half awaiting word on their area round opponent.
“They are ready to play,” Martin said. “They are looking forward to it. It’s been 10 days since they played.”
The atmosphere will be a new one for the Lady Tigers, none of whom have played a playoff basketball game.
The Rangerettes hold a size advantage inside against the Lady Tigers, with a quick, athletic post player in 6-0 senior post Cali Howard who has excellent ball-handling skills.
Martin said the Lady Tigers must do a good job on the boards against Perryton to help counter its inside presence.
Like Erin Burleson for Snyder, Howard is the only senior on her squad.
The Lady Tigers also must continue to get strong play from their guards, particularly point guard Terann Ragland and three-point threat Burleson, against a pair of juniors, Holly Yeary and Jacki McCallie.
District 3-3A third seed Denver City got past Monahans in the bi-district round, and will play number one Canyon in the area round tonight at Lubbock Christian University.
Number two seed Sweetwater runs into third-ranked Muleshoe at 6:30 p.m. Friday in Post, after topping Midland Greenwood in the bi-district round.
