Monday was the first day for candidates to file for the spring elections and Western Texas College already has a full slate of candidates for the May 15 balloting.

Both incumbent trustees, Carolyn Barbee and Dr. Jay Kidd, have filed for another six-year term.

There are four places on the Snyder city council that will expire, and one incumbent councilman, Ron Shaw, also filed Monday.

On the WTC board, Barbee, owner of Barbee Medical Supply, will be seeking her third term on the board, as will Dr. Kidd, a local dentist.

Barbee represents Place 3, while Dr. Kidd represents Place 4. Both were first elected to the WTC board in 1992.

Shaw is seeking his second term representing District 4 on the city council. He also has served two terms, as an at-large member having first been elected in 1995 and this is his second run for the District 4 position.

The terms of Vernest Tippens and Stephanie Ducheneaux are also up for election this spring and both have indicated they will seek new terms.

The District 3 spot is now vacant, as James Ashley has moved from the community.

No one has yet signed up for the posts up for election on the Snyder, Hermleigh and Ira school boards.

Two at-large places on the Snyder ISD school board will be on the ballot in May as the terms of Luann Burleson and Cathy Peoples will expire.

Peoples said last week she would seek another term while Burleson said she is undecided

At Hermleigh, the terms of Sherene Digby and David Higgins are expiring.

Digby said she was undecided and Higgins said he will not be seeking another term.

Ira trustees whose terms will expire are Keith Clements and Dirk Dunn. Both have indicated they will seek re-election.

Republican and Democratic primaries will first be held on March 9. Early voting in the primary elections begins Monday and continues through March 5.

Megali Bernal and Jana Young are vying for the Republican nominee for Scurry County tax assessor-collector.

Both are seeking the post vacated by Diana Williamson who chose not to seek another term. There is not a Democratic candidate.

Also on the GOP ballot this spring without an opponent is Terry Williams who will oppose incumbent Precinct 1 commissioner Ralph Trevey, a Democrat, in November.

Incumbent Precinct 3 commissioner Howard Limmer, a Republican, has no primary opponent, but will be opposed by Democrat Susie White in the general election.

Incumbents not drawing opponents are District Judge Ernie Armstrong, District Attorney Dana Cooley, County Attorney Mike Hartman, all Republicans; and Sheriff Darren Jackson, a Democrat.

State Representative, Scott Campbell, will not have an opponent for the Republican primary but will be opposed in the general election by Democrat Jeri Slone in a rematch of the 2002 general election.

Campbell is from San Angelo while Slone lives in Christoval.

As a result of redistricting U.S. House boundaries, Rep. Charlie Stenholm’s name won’t be on a ballot in Scurry County for the first time in 26 years.

Vying for the U.S. 11th District post on the Republican ticket are Mike Conaway of Midland and Bill Lester of Brownwood. The lone Democratic candidate is Wayne Raasch who currently resides in Monahans.
