Scurry County commissioners court, meeting this morning, learned of needed roof repairs to a hangar at the airport, and also approved use of Towle Park for a fishing rodeo fundraiser.

Airport manager Rodger Sullenger updated the court on the condition of the main hangar roof which was sprayed with a latex material some seven years ago. However, it has continued to leak, and rust has started to resurface.

Sullenger said the cost of the roof work could be in excess of $25,000 and it would be necessary to repair it soon. He told the court about a grant through the Texas Department of Transportation that soon could be available.

“I should have more information about the grant in a few days. It would be a 90-10 grant that would leave the county responsible for paying 10 percent of the costs,” said Sullenger.

Towle Park was approved as the location of a Boy Scouts fishing tournament set April 17.

James Garvin, Troop 27 chaplain, said, “This is the ninth year for the fishing tournament. Each year has been more successful than the one before.”

Last year’s event was attended by 192 who paid $5 for all-day fishing at the Towle Park pond.

“We have stocked the pond with 750 pounds of Blue Cats to get ready,” Garvin added. “It’s going to be a lot of fishing for $5.”

The money raised will benefit the scout troop by helping purchase badges, supplies and to help fund camping trips.

It was further announced that the scouts would have a campout at the park the night before the tournament.

The court accepted bids from R.E. Janes Company from their Vealmoor, Slaton and Merkel locations for type A grades three, four and five seal coating gravel for $7.50, $6.50 and $5 per ton. Also accepted was a bid from TexSand Gravel Products in Sweetwater for grade 5 seal coating gravel for $5.50 per ton.

Approved budget amendments were from J.P. 1 for $1,360 for an autopsy and $240 for communications.

Line-item transfers were from Scurry County Airport for $3,970 from runway maintenance to the airport participation grant, and from the court reporter for $250 from training and education to other equipment.
