Snyder pugilist Anthony Vasquez will join 86 other Olympic-style boxers in Tunica, Miss. for the 2004 Olympic Team Trials.
The event, which takes place Monday through Thursday, will offer the amateur boxers the chance to make the 2004 Olympic Team. The top two boxers in each weight class will advance to the Olympic Box-Offs, to be held in Cleveland Feb.27-28.
This is the first Olympic trial for Vasquez, who said he has a mixture of emotions heading into the trials.
“I’m real nervous, but I’m feeling confident,” said Vasquez.
The tournament will be a round-robin format, with a winner’s and challenger’s bracket, giving fighters who drop a decision a chance to continue on.
The winner of each bracket in each division will qualify for the Cleveland tournament.
Vasquez said he has kept up his rigorous training schedule.
“I’m prepared,” he said. “I have a real good chance of winning.”
