Monday is the first day to sign up as a candidate for school board and city council elections to be held May 15.

Actually, the first official day was Saturday, but with that date falling on the weekend, sign up is delayed.

Hopefuls for the Snyder ISD school board will have to wait one more day as Monday is an official school holiday.

The last day to file for places on the Snyder, Hermleigh or Ira school boards, plus the Snyder city council is March 15.

Early voting in the elections will begin April 28 and will conclude May 11.

All four designated district slots for the Snyder city council will be on the ballot in May.

The terms of Vernest Tippens, District 1; Stephanie Ducheneaux, District 2; and Ron Shaw, District 4 will be listed on the ballot, as well as the vacant council seat for District 3 formerly held by James Ashley who resigned earlier this month as he has moved from the city.

Tippens, Shaw and Ducheneaux have all said they will seek another term on the council.

Two at-large places on the Snyder ISD school board will be on the ballot as the terms of Luann Burleson and Cathy Peoples will expire.

At Thursday evening’s board meeting, Burleson said she was undecided about seeking another term, while Peoples said she will definitely sign up to run again.

At Hermleigh, the terms of Sherene Digby and David Higgins will expire.

Digby said she is undecided and Higgins said he will not be a candidate for re-election.

Ira trustees whose terms will expire are Keith Clements and Dirk Dunn and both have indicated they will seek another term.

Early voting for the March 9 primary begins Feb. 23 and continues through March 5.

Locally, two candidates are vying for the Republican nominee for Scurry County tax assessor-collector. The two candidates are Megali Bernal and Jana Young.

Both are seeking the post vacated by Diana Williamson who chose not to seek re-election.

Also on the GOP ballot without an opponent is Terry Williams who will oppose Democratic incumbent Precinct 1 commissioner Ralph Trevey in November.

Incumbent Precinct 3 commissioner Howard Limmer, a Republican, has no primary opponent, but will be opposed in November by Democrat Susie White.

Incumbents not drawing opponents are District Judge Ernie Armstrong, District Attorney Dana Cooley, County Attorney Mike Hartman, all Republicans; and Sheriff Darren Jackson, a Democrat.

State Rep. Scott Campbell, will not have a Republican primary opponent but wi ll face Democrat Jeri Sloan in the general election, a rematch of the 2002 general election. Campbell is from San Angelo while Sloane lives in Christoval.

As a result of redistricting of congressional boundaries, Rep. Charlie Stenholm’s name won’t be on a ballot in Scurry County for the first time in 28 years.

Vying for the U.S. 11th District post on the Republican ticket are Mike Conaway of Midland and Bill Lester of Brownwood. Democratic candidate Wayne Raasch is unopposed.
