The Snyder girls conclude the regular season tonight, having already clinched the District 3-3A title and secured a bye in the bi-district round of the playoffs.
The 10th-ranked Lady Tigers (26-2, 9-0) will try to close out the season on a 25-game winning streak when they take on last-place Merkel (4-24, 1-8) at 6:30 p.m.
“I’d like for us to play well and build some momentum going into the playoffs,” head coach Mike Martin said.
With everything in district decided -- and with Merkel wanting to spoil the Lady Tigers’ bid for a perfect district record -- tonight’s tilt has all the makings of a trap game.
“We need to go in with the right frame of mind,” he said. “If we don’t we’ll be in trouble.”
Martin said the team would know what school it would face in the area round once games tonight are finished.
Snyder will face the winner between the third-place team from District 1-3A and the runner up in District 2.
Three teams -- Sweetwater, Lamesa and Denver City -- are still in the running for the third playoff spot in the district.
The Lady Tors and the Lady Mustangs play at Sweetwater, while Denver City heads to Seminole.
Meanwhile, the Tigers continue to look for their first win in district when they tip-off with the district-leading Badgers at 8.
Merkel (24-4, 7-0) is on its way to its second district crown in as many years, while the Tigers (8-20, 0-7) are at the opposite end of the standings.
Both Ira and Hermleigh close out the basketball season tonight.
Ira travels to Borden County to draw the season to a close against the rival Coyotes, who will be in the same district with the Bulldogs next year.
The Bulldogs clinched a playoff spot Friday with a win over Sands, setting up a Feb. 24 match-up against Aspermont in Post for the bi-district round, with tip-off tentatively set for 7:30 p.m.
The Lady Bulldogs will battle with district-champion Borden County at 6:30 p.m.
Hermleigh will host Highland tonight, with the Lady Cards starting at 6:30 p.m.
The Cards will be playing their last game for retiring head coach Don Jones at 8.
