The Western Texas College softball team again squared off with some of the top teams in the country, improving in several areas while going 2-6 in the Galveston Tournament last weekend.
After committing numerous mistakes in the El Paso Tournament, the Lady Dusters shored up their glove work, head coach Rodney McNeil said.
“(In El Paso) we had about 40 errors in five games, and you can’t expect to compete when you do that,” he said. “We played a lot better, but we still need to perform in pressure situations.”
The Dusters (4-9) played host Galveston twice, winning the first game 4-0 before falling in the rematch, 3-1.
Patricia Gonzales allowed just three hits against Texarkana, but the Dusters stranded 10 base runners in a 1-0 extra-inning loss.
“We’re hitting the ball hard, just right at them,” McNeil said.
The team was blown out by San Jacinto, 11-1, before topping Grayson, 6-5.
The Dusters then fell in a heartbreaker to Bossier (La.) Community College, 2-1, giving up a lead-off walk and a bunt before a passed ball allowed the winning run to score.
McNeil said the level of competition would help them prepare for the conference schedule.
“All the teams we’ve played are comparable to the teams in our conference,” he said.
The Dusters will participate in the Midland College Tournament Friday and Saturday.
