The Westerners were swept in a pair of doubleheaders over the weekend, falling victim to the long ball against New Mexico Junior College.

“We knew they were a good team and an established program,” head coach Billy Hefflinger said. “We would have liked to come out with a win, but I’m not overly concerned -- we knew these first eight games would be difficult.”

The Westerners dropped the first game, 17-3, as NMJC hammered four home runs.

The offense got clicking in the second game, an 18-11 loss, before dropping the third 12-1.

Cameron Young pitched a solid game in the last tilt, but a three-run bomb and a solo homer completed the sweep for NMJC, 5-3.

Hefflinger said Young pitched well, while Eric Brown continued to help offensively, collecting six hits over the weekend to push his on-base percentage up near .800.

“Once we hit conference, we need to be rolling. We are getting better and better each game,” Hefflinger said. “We have yet to have one or more of our big guys have a multi-hit game, and that won’t continue.”

The Westerners will head to Abilene Tuesday for a 1 p.m. tilt with Ranger JC, before returning home Friday and Saturday for a three-game series with New Mexico Military Institute.
