The College Channel, WTC 22, begins a new programmin venture this weekend with the addition of a program entitled “Cliffhanger Weekend.”
The weekly feature will highlight the popular serial cliffhangers of the 1930s, 40s and 50s. A new “chapter” will be shown each weekend during the regular spring and fall semester.
The first serial to be broadcast is “Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe,”starring Buster Crabbe, originally released in 1940.
“Cliffhanger Weekend” will be added as a segment to the college’s weekly broadcast, “Week in Review,” which is shown at the top of the hour beginning each Friday afternoon and continuing through Monday morning.
This program may be seen on the College Channel, WTC 22, available to all local cable subscribers on Channel 22.
“Week in Review” is produced by the WTC Mass Communications Department and features the production and on-air work of students enrolled in the department’s classes.
On-air personalities include Stormy Clark and ‘Moose’ Amato. Tabitha Rodriguez is featured with sports and Kristen York will introduce the new “Cliffhanger Weekend” segment.
Other members of the crew are Shannon Jones, Tiffany Martin, Trey Roberson and Nathan Shrode. Faculty adviser for the program is Donny Brown.
This spring, “Cliffhanger Weekend” will feature all 12 chapters of the Flash Gordon adventure. The serial was based on the comic strip of the same namewhich premiered on Jan. 4, 1934 as a Sunday color comic. It was created by artist Alex Raymond.
There were three Flash Gordon serials in all, the first debuting in 1936 and released by Universal Pictures. Crabbe starred as Flash in all three serials.
The first chapter broadcast this weekend is entitled “The Purple Death.” Its running time is approximately 15 minutes.
The weekend segment of ‘Week in Review’ features also footage from Tuesday’s WTC Westerner victory over the University of Texas Permian Basin baseball team. Events occurring on campus this coming week are profiled as well.
