The opening of Western Texas College’s 2004 theatre season is just around the corner and there are three plays scheduled.
“The program saw a lot of success in the 2003 fall semester and this semester will equal, if not surpass that one,” said WTC drama instructor Ray Newton.
The first play of the season is The Mai, a drama by Irish playwright Marina Carr, will be performed Feb. 19-22.
The following weekend, Feb. 27-28, the department will present the two-woman comedy Parallel Lives by Kathy Najimy and Mo Gaffney.
“We try to do a variety of shows and believe me, these two shows are as different as they can be. The first is a serious Irish drama, while the second is a hilarious American piece. Really something for everyone,” said Newton.
The theatre department has scheduled the final pro duction of the semester for April 22-25, but the play has yet to be named.
“We want to make sure that the students have a well-rounded theatre experience, while providing the highest caliber of entertainment that we can,” Newton added.
The department will be branching out to invite high school students to taste the theatre experience at the college level by hosting the WTC Theatre Festival on March 23.
“The theatre festival is going to be a very enjoyable experience for the visiting students and I believe the WTC theatre students also will get a lot out of the experience as well,” he said. “It will give WTC a chance to show off the program to younger students who may be interested in attending in the future.”
The festival will incorporate the production of three plays by the attending schools and each presentation will receive a judged critique.
