The Western Texas College Dusters opened the spring season against some of the nation’s top softball squads in El Paso over the weekend.
In eight games, the Dusters were victorious in only two, but Coach Rodney McNeill saw promising potential against nationally-ranked squads.
In a 11-5 victory over 8th-ranked Dodge City, errors were eliminated. “We played better defense,” McNeill said.
Amber House of Fort Worth was on the hill in both wins. The second was a 6-2 triumph over Arapaho Community College.
WTC’s first two games were against Otero Community College, ranked 16th in the nation. The Dusters bowed 4-2 in the opener and then fell 13-5 in the nightcap while committing 13 errors.
Miscue continued to plague the Dusters against defending national champs Central Arizona. The national champs pounded the Dusters 9-1 with the Dusters committing nine errors.
No. 3 ranked Pima Junior College blanked the Dusters 14-0 in a tilt that saw WTC make five errors and allow six free passes.
In the final game of the El Paso tournament, WTC lost a third encounter with Otero, 6-1.
The WTC softball squad travels to Galveston for a tournament Friday and Saturday.
