Vernon Regional College swept the series against the Western Texas College Westerners last weekend, but WTC Coach Billy Hefflinger is anything but discouraged.
WTC lost to Vernon 14-3 on Friday in the season opener, and bowed 10-1 in the first game Saturday afternoon.
It was in the third tilt that WTC jelled, despite a 3-1 loss in one extra inning.
“In the first two games we gave up 22 runs on 17 walks and errors,” Hefflinger said. “We gave up eight walks in the third game, but we pitched our way out of it and started making plays.”
Despite an 0-3 start, the WTC skipper remains confident. “We got better and we’re going to get better.”
The chance to prove that comes at 2 p.m. Tuesday when WTC hosts University of Texas-Permian Basin at 2 p.m.
“Overall, we out-hit Vernon,” Hefflinger noted. “In the third game we were having to come from behind.”
The coach feels not playing a home game in the fall contributed to the sluggish start.
In the second contest, Cameron Young from Fort Worth worked 7-1/3 innings before being relieved by Galdino Pena from Wall.
Working on the mound in the front-end of the double header were John Bewley of Shallowater, Logan Hill of Snyder and Cody Guzman of Lubbock.
Offensively in Saturday’s second tilt, Landon Thompson went two for three at the plate with a double and single. Tanyon Reeves of San Angelo also connected for a double.
Also, the first-year coach is impressed with the fan support.
“Everybody stayed until the end. They didn’t leave and I bet we had 200 or more people there.” Hefflinger added. “It was a really good college atmosphere. The community support was awesome.”
