Western Texas College opened its 2004 spring campaign Friday, falling to Vernon College, 14-3, in the inaugural tilt at the new on-campus baseball field.

Tyler Trout went 3 1-3 innings, allowing nine runs on three hits as Vernon scored three runs in each of the first three innings.

The Westerners (0-1) spotted Vernon (1-0) six runs without a hit in the first two innings, victimized by shaky defense and Trout’s inability to get settled in on a frigid opening day.

Shortstop Josh Heiney collected the first hit for the Westerners this year in the fourth inning and scored on a sacrifice fly by Trey Roberson, who had two RBI for the Westerners.

The Westerners added two more runs in the sixth to close the score to 9-3.

Third baseman Derek David led off with a double, and was driven home on a double from designated hitter Tanyon Reeves. Roberson then hammered a triple to plate Reeves and round out the scoring for the Westerners.

Gladino Pena pitched 2 2-3 scoreless innings in relief of Trout.

Shay Franks relieved Pena, and Vernon put the game away in the seventh, scoring three runs before their first out.

The Chaparrals plated five in the inning to end the game on the 10-run rule.

“It’s the first game, so I don’t read too much into it,” head coach Billy Hefflinger said. “You’re going to make mistakes. We came back and fought hard, and that’s what we’ve got to do.”

The Westerners were to continue their series with Vernon Saturday, getting a doubleheader underway at noon.
