Snyder High School’s accounting team captured top honors at the regional UIL Academic contest Friday and Saturday at Odessa College.

The SHS team is composed of Josh Kemp, Matthew Kerr, Josh Payne and Seth Cooper.

Also, three team members earned individual accolades <\!m> including Kemp -- who turned in a perfect paper for the first place individual award, marking the first time one of sponsor Phyllis Smith’s students has achieved that feat.

Kemp didn’t find out until later because he was taking the mathematics test when the accounting awards were announced.

As for the perfect paper, Kemp said this morning that he was “waiting for it to happen sooner or later because I would get very close during practice sessions.”

Kemp added that it was lucky that he had the perfect paper at the regional contest and not a practice assignment.

Kerr called winning “lots of fun.” Cooper said earning first place “was exciting,” and Payne added winning was “pretty cool.”

Kerr and Kemp practice at home and Payne and Cooper get to practice during Mrs. Smith’s accounting class.

Kerr came in third and Josh Payne garnered fifth place. Seth Cooper also is a member of the team.

Kemp also placed fourth in mathematics and fifth in number sense and Kerr received third place in current issues and events.

Other winners include Megan Fletcher who placed fourth in computer applications. Blake Robertson took home fifth in prose interpretation and Erin Burleson earned sixth in ready writing.

Gretchen Hollis earned fifth in editorial writing and sixth in headlines.

On Friday, three SHS drama students won awards in the one-act contest including Coleman Welch and Logan Martin, all-star cast, and Corie Hernandez, honorable mention all-star cast.

The SHS one-act play, however, did not advance.

The state UIL Academic contest will be held in Austin May 6-8. Students on the accounting team and in current issues and events will participate. The computer applications winner is an alternate to the state contest.

Other sponsors are Lynda Patterson, computer applications; Ron Hester, prose interpretation; JoAnn Cotton, ready writing; Diane Arnold, journalism; Darlene Stokes, number sense and mathematics; Beth Bowen, current issues and events; and Michael McQuerry, one-act play.
