Snyder High School band students performed first in the recent UIL Concert and Sight-reading contest at Wayland Baptist University, wowing the judges.

SHS earned a I (superior rating) in concert and a I in sight-reading. None of the 3A bands in our region won the coveted “Sweepstakes” this year.

SHS and Lubbock Cooper made a II at the marching contest in October. In order to earn sweepstakes a band must earn a superior or I rating in marching, concert and sight-reading.

The judges had good things to say about the local students. Concert judge Bruce Kenner noted, “Very nice dynamics and stylistic presentations.... I am so glad and proud to hear the Snyder Band playing on this level.”

Rocky Harris, concert judge, said “Great job on a tough march!.. Well taught with clear sounds.”

Sight-reading judge Cody Myers said, “I thought you really played musically and responded well to director instructions and baton. Percussion did an excellent job today! Yea!!”

Anthony Gibson, sight-reading judge, said “Fantastic job at reading! I know your school and community are proud of you and rightfully so! Go tigers!”

Here’s how the other schools in Snyder’s district fared:

Denver City: Concert 1; sight-reading 2; Muleshoe: 2, 2; Littlefield: 1, 2; Lubbock Cooper: 1, 1; Lamesa: 2, 2; Seminole: 2, 2; Slaton: 2, 2; Brownfield: 1, 2.
