LAMESA -- The Snyder Lady Tigers closed out the district softball season Tuesday, winning the district championship outright with a 5-2 extra-inning victory over Lamesa.

With the win, the Lady Tigers (19-9, 11-1) earned a bye in the bi-district round, and will await the winner of Dimmett and Canyon in the area round.

The win was not guaranteed until the eighth, as the Lady Tigers committed six errors.

Snyder jumped out to a 1-0 in the first inning on a double by Laura Clanton that turned into a score thanks to a two-base error by the Lady Tors.

Lamesa scored two unearned runs in the first inning off starter Kelsi Johnson, who went three innings and struck out two.

“We played very flat,” head coach Darren Pool said. “The girls woke up in about the sixth or seventh inning and realized what was going on. Defensively, we had a big letdown.”

Snyder strung together a handful of hits to tie it at 2-2 in the seventh, and Briana Bernal drove in the game-winning RBI in the eighth.

Ashley Martinez went the final five innings, allowing five hits and striking out nine, and went 2-for-4 at the plate.

Amber Luecke also went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs.

Pool said the team needed to get back to basics during the bye week.

“We’ve got a lot of work to do on fielding fundamentals,” he said. “We’ll see if we can find a practice game and get back to fundamentals and get prepared for the playoffs.”

The area round contests are slated for May 8, but the team will not know the site or time until the conclusion of the bi-district round.
