Western Texas College split the final two games of the regular season Saturday, coming from behind to score four runs in the bottom of the seventh to win, 5-4.

Trailing 4-1 with Matt Meredith reached on an error and scored on a double by Derek David.

David scored on a single by Eric Brown, who was driven home by Tanyon Reeves to tie it at 4-4.

Reeves scored the winning run on a Midland error on a slow chopper from Landon Thompson.

Shay Franks got the win for the Westerners.

Midland College coach Steve Ramharter protested the doubleheader because he disapproved of the selection of the umpires. However, Ramharter dropped the protest of the second game, which Midland won, 11-1.

The loss dropped Midland into third place, allowing Howard College to move into second.

Hefflinger said he could not find new umps for Saturday’s games, adding that Midland should not have played since it disapproved of the officials.

“If they didn’t like them, then they should have waited until we got new umpires,” head coach Billy Hefflinger said.

WTC athletic director Dave Hanes said he was waiting to find out from the Western Junior College Athletic Conference, which was holding a meeting about the protest this morning, whether the teams would have to make up the protested game.

The teams also split Friday, with Franks getting the win in the 12-inning, 5-4 nightcap.

Midland took the opener, 7-3.

The Westerners (14-36, 8-24) doubled their conference win total from a year ago, beating every team in the conference.

Regardless of the outcome of the protest hearing, WTC will have a play-in game with New Mexico Military Institute at 10 a.m. Thursday in El Paso, with Logan Hill getting the start for WTC. The winner will earn a spot in the conference tournament.

“If we play the way we played this weekend and stay aggressive, we’ll win,” Hefflinger said.
